You’ve heard from me many times about the importance of being on camera. Video is the #1 way to reach your ideal client online. So I wanted to share some tips that you can implement today around how to instantly be more confident on camera.
I know it’s a scary thing. And for most people, it’s foreign – you’re not used to talking in front of some inanimate object! But trust me, if you really implement these tools you’ll come across more authentic. And when you make someone feel something on the other side of the camera lens, things will start to explode within your business.
#1 – Embrace Discomfort
Anything we do for the first or second time is uncomfortable. Remember that first workout you did that caused you so much pain? Or the first time you got on a pair of skis and trampled down the hill instead of gliding like everyone else. Video is the same thing. The more you do it, the better you get.
For two years, I was in the room the size of a shoe box shooting videos for a company. I was on camera, reading a prompter eight hours every other week. It used to take me SO long to shoot eight episodes! But within a few months, I was shooting them in just a couple of hours.
The more you do anything the better you get. Video and delivering your message is all about consistency. The more you do it, two great things will happen:
- You’ll feel a lot more comfortable.
- People will look forward to seeing you on camera.
It’s a win-win for everyone. So practice, practice, practice!
#2 – Stop Comparing Yourself
Don’t compare yourself to me or to someone else that you look up to, because we’re all on our own journey. We all have different skill levels and things we’re great at.
I’ve been on camera since I was a little girl and STILL have those voices that say, “you sound like that? You look like that?!” It’s human to judge yourself. It’s human to compare yourself. But you are incomparable. You are one of a kind. So stop trying to be what you think you need to be and step into your authentic self. Speaking of authenticity…
#3 – Authenticity
Authentic is a buzz word we hear a lot but what does it really mean? To me it means you know who you are, you know what you stand for, you know your message, and finally, you know who you’re talking to.
The only way you’re going to be truly confident on camera is to love all of it. Loving the things you don’t like, loving the things you do, and being confident in the results that you give someone.
Confidence comes from clarity. Confidence comes from commitment, confidence comes from getting other people results. So really look at who you are and embrace it! The good, the bad, and the other. We all have that inner self-critic so we must make a conscious effort to quiet the noise.
A little Shopping List to refer to before you press record
- Who are you talking to?
- Why YOU? Know why you’re the person who can help them.
- Know what the person wants.
- Know the result you want them to take from watching your video.
Who are you talking to? I often hear people say “pretend you’re talking to your best friend!” That’s great but quite frankly, my message might not resonate with my BF. Understand that one person you’re trying to reach.
When you’re trying to reach everyone, you reach no-one. And when you’re trying to talk to that one person, you reach many.
When you understand that, the minute you press record, you’re going to sound more confident and clear because you know who you’re talking to. Instead just talking to muppets. Don’t talk to muppets, k?
Talk to one person. One will reach many.
#4 – Practice
It’s all about practice at being your authentic self. The biggest compliment I get from people is, “Keri, how you are on camera is the same way I see you in person, it’s the same way when you speak.” And that’s taken some practice.
I used to be really “hosty” and a little cheesy on camera – we all have our stuff. Just remember who you are and why you’re using this platform. And the more you use it, the easier it will get. Pinky promise.
I would love to hear from you! Please let us know in the comments either
1) What is your biggest fear right now when it comes from putting yourself out there?
2) If you are using video right now, how often are you using it?
Can’t wait to read about your experiences! And if you’re inspired by this video, please share it with someone you care about.
As always, thank you so much for watching. Remember to Keep Dreaming it. Living it. And BEing it.
Until next time,
Keri
