Chris Guillebeau, entrepreneur and author of The $100 Startup: Reinvent the Way You Make a Living, Do What You Love, and Create a New Future sat down with Business on Main, and offered tips for creating a microbusinesses on a budget based on your passions and expertise.
Guillebeau said, “I’m not sure it’s only young people who are doing it now. Obviously, younger people get more attention because they’re having a harder time competing in the job market, so they’re forced to go out on their own. But I hear from people of all ages who are doing it.”
There are many considerations when starting your own business. Guillebeau suggests focusing on how your passion will benefit others. Innovation is not always key, but usefulness can bring value to your product or service. It is also beneficial to look at the types of businesses that are booming today.
Forbes.com published statistics stating that of the approximately 27 million businesses in the U.S., a growing number are one-person operations.

- E-commerce- Thanks to the ease of comparison-shopping right from the comfort of your own home, Americans are spending more money online than ever before. This is a trend expected to continue, growing 8.8% annually through 2017. Employment is also expected to move from 177,642 e-commerce related jobs last year to 183,396 by the end of 2012 and nearly 206,000 in 2017. Americans are expected to spend $334.3 billion online by the end of 2017.
- Residential Construction- After years of stagnant residential construction, the industry is finally expected to make an upward turn. Demand and improving incomes will drive the industry. It is projected to increase 10.4 percent per year until 2017.
- Restaurants- From food trucks, fast and casual restaurants, to full-service dining, pocketbooks with more disposable income are allowing for even the budget-conscious to eat out.
