Dress for Success delegate- Sonja McKenzie

Back in early 2010, Sonja and her children, now 10 ½, 9 and 7-year-old twins, were a normal family, living in their own home, while Sonja finished her last year with AmeriCorps. Then the housing grant used to lease their home was eliminated and the family faced eviction. So they packed up their home, placed their items in storage and lived for several months with various friends. A friend offered them a temporary home in Portland (rooms in a portion of a daycare facility) and Sonja interviewed for a job at OHSU.

To prepare for the interview, Sonja went to Dress for Success, a non-profit organization that provides interview suits and career development to low-income women. Her efforts were successful and she began her job as a Planning Coordinator, working to develop a state-wide AmeriCorps program, at OHSU.

For a time, their daily lives had stabilized. But the OHSU job was a one-year grant, their housing temporary and Sonja knew she needed a plan for the future.

She and her children moved into the family shelter, Share Orchards Inn in May 2011.

Sonja was able to relax, save money and strategize. Upon leaving shelter, Dress for Success gave Sonja money toward first month’s rent and utilities and her family moved into an apartment. She continued to seek permanent employment; she recently accepted a job as an Admissions Advisor at American Intercontinental University, an on-line university.

She continued her role as a delegate with Dress for Success, through which she received ‘seed money’ from WalMart toward a project called Circle of Friends.

Despite the challenges, Sonja shared that she has grown from this experience and that it has made her stronger. She is currently looking to purchase a home, one with “a backyard and a fence for all the kids.”

Dress for Success Delegate- Michelle Boyle

After losing her job, her home to foreclosure, and her 10 year marriage to divorce, Michelle Boyle and her two children moved to Oregon with little more than the clothes on their back and a suitcase of hope.  Michelle quickly got a new job and a positive outlook and things seemed to be going her way.  But after a year, she was laid off and found herself struggling, once again, to keep food on the table.  With no child support, distant family, and few friends, it was very difficult to maintain an upbeat outlook she knew she needed to find her next great opportunity.

Knowing that failure was not an option, she began to network and actively seek out the support she needed.  “Dress for Success provided me with much more than a suit.” says Michelle.  It provided her with a positive outlook, a supportive environment, and a stable networking of strong and hard working women like herself.

With Dress for Success’s help she found an amazing opportunity that gave her the opportunity to help others by working for a Portland based non-profit agency.  Today, in addition to working full time as a procurement professional, she is also starting her own business.  In the last few years Michelle has really found her stride and is now a published author of a children’s travel guide, a regional speech competition winner, an inventor with two patents, and the hardest working mom you’ll ever meet.  She also puts her creative writing skills to work writing the blog; “Conquering Unemployment.”  But, above all,  Michelle works hardest at setting a good example for her two teenaged children.
