This is a call asking everyone to share the love and spread kindness, especially after the tragedy in Colorado last night. I will share my story from tonight and hopefully it will inspire all of you to spread the goodness we all have in us.
Driving onto my street in SE Portland, I saw a 5’2″, 50ish year old woman, about 200 lbs. She was obviously homeless and pushing a heavy, overloaded grocery cart. By the time I parked my car in my driveway, ran to my fridge and got back to her, she was attempting to push her cart across Powell Blvd – a very busy street. I helped to stop traffic for her and once we got across, I asked if she wanted some string cheese and a cold can of lemonade – which I had in my hand for her. She looked shocked and surprised, as if where the hell did I come from, lol! She thanked me multiple times, in her little Eastern European accent.
Not every homeless person is a “crackhead” or an alcoholic. Even if they are, that doesn’t mean they are worthless. We all deserve love and respect. If you see someone on the street that looks like they could use some kindness, go with your gut. Too often we are taught to ignore them and not make eye contact. Too often I have ignored my gut and kept going. Tonight I didn’t, and hope I made someone feel cared about.
Let’s be kind and loving, and forgiving. Life is too short, as we have learned with these recent shootings. Love and peace to all.
