When we’re young (and reckless perhaps!) health is easily taken for granted. It’s almost impossible to wrap your head around the fact that the choices you make will have a consequence on your health, perhaps tomorrow or later in life. I know that in my circle of friends, many of us are reaching a point in our lives where the way we’ve treated ourselves is beginning to catch up with us. Some have reaped the benefits of a commitment to health, and others are experiencing regret.
I know many of you are real go-getters. You probably are the type that care deeply and care well for those around you. You may have families, demanding careers and passions that consume your every thought. And to that I say Bravo! But all of this is moot if you do not have a solid foundation of good health. You can not care well for your family, make the most of your career or give you dreams all that they deserve if you’re not giving your health the high priority it necessitates.
Here’s a simple list of what I’m talking about. (And yes, your mother would agree!)
* Get adequate rest.
* Drink plenty of non-sugared, non-artificial liquids to be hydrated. Water is always best.
* Eat a variety of plant-based foods daily. Rethink the plate here. 2/3 or more of your plate should be plant-based.
* Limit alcohol, sweets and fats. None of them are a necessity and should only be enjoyed in moderation.
* Exercise 5 times per week. No, you don’t have to run a marathon (unless you want to!). It can be as simple as walking. Don’t ignore the benefits of simple strength training. Lifting weights can do more for your bone density that any calcium supplement.
* Get outside and breathe. Enjoy the outdoors for the fresh air, and the fresh perspective.
* ALWAYS WEAR SUNSCREEN – even if it’s grey out, or you’d rather have a tan – it’s not worth the risk of skin cancer, which is an ugly reality for more and more people these days.
Obviously, I’m a big proponent of leading a physically, mentally and spiritually fit life. It’s not a diet, it’s not a fix to a problem. It’s a commitment to feeling better and living life to it’s fullest. Because the choices we make today – what we eat, how much rest we get, when we exercise and how we treat our bodies – dictate not only how we feel today, but give the best boost to our future selves.
Shine ON!!
